Why Vibe Coders Need an Automated Code Reviewer

You opened Cursor on a Tuesday with an idea. By Friday you had a working app. Auth, payments, a database, three pages of UI. You did not write most of it. Claude did. You vibed.

The speed you gained, you also lost

Think about what code review actually exists for. It is not a vanity check. It catches:

  • Bugs the author missed
  • Security holes (auth bypass, exposed secrets, leaked PII)
  • Drift from the team’s conventions

  • Edge cases the author did not consider

In a normal team, a teammate does this. They read your PR. They flag the stuff. You fix it before merge.

Why “I’ll just review it myself” does not work

You have probably tried this. We have heard it from a hundred vibe coders. “I read every line before I merge.”

Three things happen.

One: the diffs are too big. AI does not produce small, surgical changes the way a human does. You ask for “add a settings page” and Claude touches twelve files. The diff is 800 lines. You skim it. You miss things.

Two: AI writes plausible-looking wrong code. This is the dangerous one. Bad code from a junior dev looks bad. You see it and flag it. Bad code from an LLM looks like it knows what it is doing. The variable names are good. The comments are reasonable. The function structure tracks. Then it silently swaps a === for a ==, or removes the auth middleware on a route, or changes how a date is parsed. You read past it.

Three: nobody is the second pair of eyes. The whole point of code review is that someone other than the author looks at it. If you wrote it (or directed an AI to write it), you have author bias. You see what you intended, not what is on the screen. A second reviewer sees the actual code.

Self-review is not a strategy. It is a confession that there is no review.

Some are linters with a chat interface. They catch syntax issues and style nits. Useful, but not what we are talking about.

Some are noise machines that comment on every line of every PR. Developers learn to ignore them within a week.

  3. Tells you what is good, what needs work, and what to think about

”But Cursor / Claude Code already reviews my code”

Sort of. Not really.

When you are writing code in Cursor or Claude Code, the AI is the author. The AI can spot some of its own mistakes, but it suffers from the same author bias a human does. It sees what it intended.

What changes when every PR gets reviewed

Standards drift stopped. Before, naming conventions slowly degraded. Files would pop up using camelCase in a snake_case repo. After, every PR that drifted got flagged on the diff.
