Why we built free tools that never touch your files

In March 2025, the FBI Denver Field Office warned that criminals are using free online file converter sites to distribute malware. Sites that looked completely legitimate (and actually performed conversions) were silently installing info-stealers and ransomware on users' machines.

Even the "safe" conversion tools upload your files to their servers, run ad tracking on your document conversions, and have privacy policies that allow employee access to your files. Your tax return, your contract, your medical records. Processed on someone else's server, tracked by someone else's analytics.

We thought that was wrong. So we built something better.

How it works

The file tools run entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device. There's no server processing them. We couldn't see your files even if we wanted to. They set a strict Content Security Policy that blocks outbound network requests: no fetch, no XHR, no WebSocket, no form submissions, no image beacons, no iframes. A security researcher can inspect the page source and verify. The website checks are the exception — the Website Health Check and every individual check: you give them a domain, not a file, and they look up that domain's public records server-side.

What we don't do

No analytics. No cookies. No tracking. No ads. We didn't even put Google Analytics on this page.

We don't even use a PDF library for document conversion. Your browser makes the PDF. We just make the document look good.

Why we're giving this away

We're Surmado. AI for small business. We believe if you handle people's data, you should respect it. These tools are us putting that principle into practice. Before we ask for a dollar.

If you like how we think, check out what we're building.
