Character Counter measures your text in the browser as you type. It counts characters with and without spaces, plus words, sentences, paragraphs, and lines, and estimates silent reading time at 238 words per minute. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, and text written without spaces, such as Japanese, is split into real words. Pick a limit and a meter shows how much room is left.
When to use this
It's the right tool when length is the constraint: a page title that has to fit in search results, a meta description that gets cut off, a social post with a hard cap, or an application field that rejects anything longer. The most-used words table also catches the phrase you have repeated six times without noticing.

Frequently asked questions
Does the character count include spaces?
Both counts are shown side by side. Characters counts everything you typed, spaces and line breaks included. No spaces strips every space, tab, and line break, which is usually what an application form means by its limit.
Does Surmado see what I type?
No. The counting runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to our servers, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.
Is this character counter free?
Yes. There's no signup, no usage cap, and no premium tier.
How are emoji and accented characters counted?
As one character each. A flag or a family emoji counts as one here, even though it is several code points underneath. Some platforms bill emoji differently, so treat their own counter as final when you are close to a hard cap.
Does it count Japanese or Chinese correctly?
Yes, in current browsers. Word counting uses the browser's own text segmentation, so languages written without spaces are split into real words instead of being counted as one long word.
How is this different from tools like WordCounter or Character Count Online?
It measures the same things and adds the limit you are actually writing against, from page titles to social posts to a number you set yourself, with a meter that shows what is left. There are no ads, no signup, and the page makes no network requests at all.
How do you count words, sentences, paragraphs, and lines?
Characters counts everything you typed, spaces and line breaks included, while No spaces removes all whitespace. A word follows Unicode word rules, so a hyphenated compound like state-of-the-art counts once, and Japanese or Chinese written without spaces is still split into real words. A sentence ends at terminal punctuation or at a line break, so a list or a table counts each line as a sentence. A paragraph is a block separated by a blank line. Lines counts real line breaks, not the wrapped lines you see on screen, so the number does not change when the box gets narrower. Other counters draw some of these lines differently, so a small gap between two tools is usually a difference of definition rather than an error.
