Can I Move My Wix Website? What Exports, What Doesn't, and What To Do Instead

Short answer: not the way most people picture it. Wix doesn't let you download your site and open it somewhere else. Here's exactly what does move, what doesn't, and what actually works instead, sourced from Wix's own documentation rather than guesswork.
What Wix actually lets you export
Per Wix's own help documentation (checked August 2026), a handful of things do come out as files:
- Store products, as a CSV file. Digital products aren't included in that export.
- Contacts, as a CSV file, up to 50,000 at a time.
- Orders, from Wix Stores, Bookings, Restaurants, or Donations.
- CMS collection content, if you've built any custom collections on the site.
That's data. It's not the site. None of it includes your design, your page layouts, or how any of it actually looks.
What you can't take, and why "Transfer Site" doesn't mean what you hope
Your design, your pages, and your layout have no export path at all. Wix states directly that Wix sites are built to run on Wix's own servers; there's no download, no zip file, no "publish elsewhere" option anywhere in the product.
The "Transfer site" menu inside Wix is easy to misread as an exit. It isn't one. It moves a site toanother Wix account, not off Wix, and even that transfer is lossy: contacts, orders, and invoices aren't copied over, and a Wix Payments account doesn't transfer at all. It's an ownership handoff between two Wix users, not a way to leave the platform.
One honest gap: we couldn't confirm, one way or the other, whether blog posts specifically export cleanly through any current Wix tool. If that matters for your site, check Wix's current help documentation or ask their support directly before you rely on it either way.
Your domain: the one thing you fully control
Unlike the design and the data, your domain isn't locked to Wix. Here's how to check and move it.
Look up your domain at lookup.icann.org
Check the Registrar field. It tells you whether your domain was bought through Wix or through an outside registrar and just pointed at Wix.
If it's registered through Wix
Your Wix account settings have a domain transfer option. You'll unlock the domain and get an authorization code, then use that code to move the domain to a new registrar of your choice.
If it's registered elsewhere
Nothing to transfer. Once your new site is ready, you simply update the domain's nameservers or DNS records to point at wherever the new site lives. No account handoff required.

Protecting your Google standing on the way out
Whichever path you choose, three things protect the search visibility you've already built: keep your page URLs the same wherever you can, set up redirects for any URL that does have to change, and carry over your existing page titles and meta descriptions instead of starting them from scratch. Note down what currently ranks before you start, so you have something to compare against afterward.
Costs and timelines, honestly
A do-it-yourself rebuild costs no cash but real hours, and the total depends heavily on how many pages and how much custom design the site has. A hired freelancer or agency turns those hours into a quote, usually priced by the page or by scope; get more than one quote, since pricing varies widely.
