Look at the bottom of your website. If the copyright line still says 2023, you already know the feeling. The site is technically up, technically fine, and quietly two years behind.
Most people picture a neglected website that way: an old year in the footer, a “latest news” post from 2022, a phone number nobody changed. That is the part you can see.
It is not the part that gets you hacked, spoofed, or skipped by the AI a customer just asked for a recommendation. Website maintenance is the work of keeping a site secure, current, reachable, and readable after it launches. The visible half is easy to picture. The half that actually matters is invisible, and it is the half most maintenance plans quietly skip.
What website maintenance actually means
Website maintenance is everything that keeps a live site working after launch day. It breaks into four jobs:
- Keep it secure. Software behind the site stays patched, and nothing gets quietly injected while you aren’t looking.
- Keep it trusted. The certificate stays valid, and your email is set up so your messages arrive and nobody can send mail as you.
- Keep it fast and usable. The homepage loads quickly on a real phone, and the layout doesn’t break on a small screen.
- Keep it readable. Search engines and AI assistants can reach the site and understand what your business does.
Most plans sold as “website maintenance” cover the first job and part of the third. Updates and backups. That is maintenance the way changing the oil is car ownership: necessary, and nowhere near the whole job.
Updating your software is table stakes, not the finish line
The standard maintenance pitch is “we keep your plugins and your CMS updated.” Good. Do it. But updates alone are not what keeps a site safe.
In Sucuri’s 2023 analysis of hacked websites, 39.1% were running out-of-date software at the point of infection. Read it the other way: roughly six in ten compromised sites were not behind on updates. They were current and got breached anyway. Only 13.97% had a known-vulnerable plugin or theme at cleanup time.
Updating closes the easy door. It does nothing about the doors nobody checked.
The maintenance nobody puts on the checklist
Here is the work that keeps a site trusted and findable, and almost never appears on a maintenance plan.
Your email can be spoofed, and you would not know
The most expensive website problem for a small business usually isn’t the website. It’s the email attached to the domain.
Three records decide whether your mail is trusted: SPF (which servers may send as you), DKIM (a signature proving the mail is really yours), and DMARC (what receivers should do when something fails). As of December 2025, 83.9% of domains had no DMARC record at all. And “we have SPF” is often false comfort: publish two SPF records by accident and receivers throw out both, so you effectively have none.
When this drifts, two quiet things happen. Your own messages start landing in spam or vanishing, so the contact-form lead never hears back. “Has SSL” is not the same as a valid certificate
A padlock is not a pass. A certificate can be expired, cover the wrong hostname, or have a broken chain, and the browser will still throw the full-screen “your connection is not private” warning that sends customers straight back to search results.

Can AI even read your site
This is the newest maintenance category, and it barely exists on legacy plans.
When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a business like yours, those tools have to be allowed to read your site first. That permission lives in a small file called robots.txt, and it is easy to accidentally block the AI crawlers while trying to block spam bots. A site that launched fast can slow down as images and code pile up. Tap targets end up too close together, text shrinks under 12px, a section runs wider than the screen. None of it shows an error. Why this half goes unmaintained
Because nobody owns it, and nothing screams.
An outdated copyright year at least looks wrong. An expired DMARC alignment, a certificate 20 days from expiry, a robots.txt line that quietly blocks GPTBot, none of that shows up when you load your own homepage. It shows up as a lead that never called, an invoice scam a customer blames on you, or an AI answer that recommends the shop down the street. How often should a website be maintained? Continuously, not once a year. Certificates expire on a fixed date, email records drift when you change providers, and AI crawler rules change on the platforms’ schedule, not yours. Maintenance that happens once is just a snapshot of a site that keeps moving.
Is keeping my software updated enough? No. It’s necessary, but most hacked sites in Sucuri’s data weren’t even out of date. Updates are one of four jobs, alongside trust (email and certificates), speed, and readability.
What’s included in good website maintenance? Security and patching, a valid certificate, correct email authentication, fast mobile performance, and access for search engines and AI. If a plan only lists “updates and backups,” it’s covering part of one job.
Do I need maintenance if my site works fine? “Works fine” usually means it loads on your laptop. It says nothing about whether your email is trusted, your certificate is valid next month, or an AI assistant can read you. Those are the parts that fail silently.
