The Secretary of State filing is not a license to do the work. What you need depends on the activity and the city. Start with the commerce licenses page, then the city, then the agency that regulates your kind of work.
What’s different in Oklahoma
- No single statewide business license for ordinary services. A city or county can still require one.
- General contracting is not a state license. Trade work is, and the locality can add its own.
- Food you make at home is usually still subject to state sales tax. A license exemption, if one applies, is a separate rule.
- Alcohol licenses come from the ABLE Commission, and the applications are online.
Do this
- Read the commerce licenses page for your kind of work. The page says there is no state license for many ordinary services, such as repair, cleaning, general consulting, bookkeeping and lawn work. A city or county may still require one1. If your type is not on the page, the page says to contact Business Customer Services at the Secretary of State, then the agency for your work.
- Ask the city where you will actually work. The commerce page says your city may require its own license. That is common for taxis, mobile vendors and outdoor sellers, and it can apply to other businesses1. Contact the municipality directly. This page does not use one city’s fee as the state rule.
- Selling taxable goods? The same commerce page says the sales tax permit is $201 plus a handling fee it does not price. Register on OkTAP. Get your tax IDs explains the permit.
- Get a trade license if the work is a licensed trade. The Construction Industries Board says there is no state license for general contracting. Trade licenses are required for licensed trade work, and local jurisdictions should be contacted for their own requirements2. The board’s site lists the trades it licenses, from electrical to roofing. The statement does not print the application fee.* Use the board’s application for the trade you will perform, and ask the city about its own permit.
- Selling food from home? The Tax Commission says home-prepared food is most often treated as prepared food, so not eligible for the zero state rate4. That is the sales tax answer, not the food law. The Local Food Freedom Act, in effect November 1, 2026, raised the annual sales cap for a local food business to $250,0006. Read the act for what you can sell and how, and check the county, before you sell.
- Selling alcohol? The ABLE Commission says you apply online, for the manufacture, distribution or sale of alcoholic beverages. For fees, the licenses page points to the statutes for the fee schedule and does not print one fee3. The page also says some business structures, including limited liability partnerships, may face restrictions, and it tells you to check the latest statements.* Use the license that matches what you will sell, and confirm that the structure you filed can hold it.
- A licensed profession is a separate step from the company filing. Register your business has the professional LLC rule: a certificate from the regulating board that each owner or manager who will practice is licensed in Oklahoma5. The board that licenses the profession is the one that issues the license. Start with the commerce page, then the board for your work.
What you get back
A city license where the ordinance requires one, a state trade or professional license if the work needs it, and an alcohol license if you sell alcohol. Each one has its own renewal. Write the date down. The Secretary of State certificate is not any of these.
Common questions
Do I need a business license in Oklahoma?
Often not from the state. The commerce page says there is no state license for many ordinary services, such as repair, cleaning, general consulting, bookkeeping and lawn work. A city or county may still require one. Contact the city where you will work.
Do I need a contractor license in Oklahoma?
It depends on the work. The Construction Industries Board says there is no state license for general contracting. Trade licenses are required for licensed trade work, and local jurisdictions should be contacted for their own requirements. It does not print the fee for each trade on that statement. Check the application for the trade.
Can I sell food from my home in Oklahoma?
Sales tax and the food law are separate questions. The Tax Commission says home-prepared food is most often treated as prepared food, so not eligible for the zero state rate. The Local Food Freedom Act, in effect November 1, 2026, raised the annual sales cap for a local food business to $250,000. Read the law's conditions, and check the county, before you sell.
Do I need a license to sell alcohol in Oklahoma?
Yes, from the ABLE Commission. You apply online, for the manufacture, distribution or sale of alcoholic beverages. For fees, the licenses page points to the statutes for the fee schedule and does not print one fee.
Does the state filing cover a professional license?
No. A professional LLC also needs a certificate from the regulating board that each owner or manager who will practice is licensed in Oklahoma. That certificate is not the license. The license comes from the board for the profession.
