Surmado vs B12 (2026): Two AI-Plus-Human Website Services, Compared Honestly

Surmado and B12 both blend AI website generation with human experts. An honest comparison of pricing, QA, ownership, and who each is built for.

Most AI website tools fall into one of two buckets. Pure builders like Wix or Squarespace hand you an editor and you do the ongoing work yourself. Migration tools like Repaint, 10Web, and Webnode rebuild your existing site once, then hand it back to you to operate (we’ve compared those in detail elsewhere).

B12 doesn’t fit either bucket, and neither does Surmado. Both pair AI generation with actual human work, design, copy, or quality review, and both keep functioning after launch instead of walking away once the site is live. That makes B12 the closest business-model comparison to Surmado in this category. Not the cheapest option, not the fastest one. The most similar one.

Here’s an honest look at what each actually includes, what it costs, and who it’s really built for.

Why these two are actually comparable

Both companies sell the same basic promise: AI does the fast, structural work, and a human is somewhere in the loop for the parts that need judgment. Where they differ is where the human shows up, and what you have to pay to get them there.

B12

How it works. You answer a few questions and B12’s AI generates a website draft in about a minute, pulling in industry-appropriate copy, images, and layout. From there you’re in B12’s own editor: you refine text, swap images, and keep chatting with the AI to make changes. The platform also ships with client-facing business tools built in, intake forms, online scheduling, payment collection, and invoicing, so a service business can run its whole client pipeline through the same login as its website.

Pricing. A free plan exists but carries B12 branding and a capped number of AI messages. Basic runs $49 a month ($42 billed annually) and includes hosting, a custom domain, and the core client tools above. Basic + Client Engagement is $78 a month and adds contracts and e-signatures, file uploads, and team management. Professional is $199 a month and adds site analytics and more team seats. Advanced is $399 a month for larger teams. If you want an actual human designer and copywriter to build the site instead of doing it yourself in the editor, that’s Expert Setup: a $1,999 one-time fee on top of the Professional or Advanced subscription, for a professionally designed and written site of up to 15 pages. Design or copy help after that initial build runs $75 an hour.

What it’s good at. The client-engagement layer is genuinely strong and genuinely rare bundled into a website platform. For a consultant, coach, therapist, or small professional-services firm that lives on booked appointments and signed agreements, having intake, scheduling, and e-signatures live inside the site itself, not three separate SaaS logins, is a real advantage. It’s also the cheaper door to walk through if your budget starts under $50 a month.

Where it stops. The human part of “AI plus human” isn’t standard. It’s a $1,999 commitment you make before a designer or copywriter touches your site, on top of a subscription you’re already paying, not after you’ve seen the finished result and decided you want it. And per B12’s own help documentation, the site itself is locked to B12’s platform: it can’t be downloaded or moved to another builder or host while you’re a customer, and canceling leaves your site unpublished, not exported.

Surmado

How it works. Surmado’s AI rebuilds your existing website (or builds a new one from a description if you don’t have one) on a faster, more accessible foundation. A human then runs it through a 42-point QA pass before you see a bill. You get the actual finished, working preview first. You approve it, your domain moves, and billing starts only then, not before.

Pricing. Surmado sells two things. Pay As You Go research Jobs at $50 each, for a business that just wants a single Site Audit or AI Visibility check with no ongoing commitment. And two memberships. Pro is $99 a month billed annually, or $150 month to month. Pro+ is $199 a month billed annually, or $250 month to month, and adds a custom chatbot trained on your site, up to five additional languages kept in sync, weekly blog posts, and ten research Jobs a month.

Pro includes the free rebuild and preview described above, hosting and your domain, ongoing maintenance and security and dependency updates, human support and that same 42-point QA on every future change, and edits anytime through Surmado’s AI or the human team. It also includes one additional language kept genuinely in sync forever (hreflang and structured data handled, not a bolted-on translate widget), five research Jobs every month (Site Audit, AI Visibility, Strategy, and deep research), weekly monitoring, and a 7-day money-back guarantee. Surmado’s AI carries persistent memory of the business: prior reports, prior changes, and what you asked for last time, and it can write changes directly to the site with a human verifying before anything goes live. Running more than one site, a franchise, or an agency book of client sites isn’t the standard Pro shape; email hi@surmado.com and it gets handled directly.

What it’s good at. You never learn a dashboard. You ask, in plain English, and the change goes live once you approve it. AI Visibility in particular checks whether AI platforms actually recommend your business when someone asks, the modern version of showing up in search, sometimes called AEO. That, plus a Site Audit and a Strategy Job, comes bundled every month rather than sold as a separate analytics add-on.

Where it stops. There’s no built-in client intake, scheduling, or invoicing layer the way B12 has one. If your business runs on booked appointments and signed contracts and you want that living inside the same platform as your site, B12’s client-engagement tools are the more direct fit today.

Ownership: what happens if you leave

Both companies get asked a version of this question eventually, so it’s worth answering plainly instead of in the fine print.

B12: your content and your domain are yours. If B12 registered your domain for you, they’ll transfer it whenever you ask, active customer or not. The built website itself is a different story. Per B12’s own help center, it can’t be downloaded or moved to another builder or hosting company. Cancel and you keep editor access, but the site goes unpublished.

Surmado: you keep all rights to your content, copy, images, and your domain, and you can export your content and get help offboarding anytime, no exit tax. What Surmado keeps is the code and the production pipeline, the actual engineering that lets a $99-a-month membership include hosting, security patching, and human QA on every change without a per-hour meter running. If you need the underlying code handed over, Surmado is the wrong fit for you, and that’s a fair thing to know going in rather than finding out later.

Choose B12 if

  • You’re a professional-services business (coach, consultant, therapist, small agency) that lives on bookings and signed agreements, and you want that client workflow inside the same platform as your website.
  • You want the cheapest possible entry point and you’re comfortable editing an AI-generated draft yourself.
  • You’re fine paying $1,999 once for human design and copy help, then going back to a $75-an-hour meter after that.

Choose Surmado if

  • You want to see the actual finished, rebuilt site before you pay anything, not a template you then have to finish yourself.
  • You want human QA as the default on every change, not something you unlock with a bigger invoice.
  • You want AI visibility tracking, site audits, and strategy work bundled with the website itself instead of sold as a separate subscription.
  • You want a business that remembers what you asked for last time and can act on it directly, with a human still reachable behind it.

Neither is the wrong choice. They’re solving the “AI plus human, not just AI” problem for two different kinds of businesses. Figure out which layer, the client workflow or the research and visibility layer, matters more to yours, and start there.
